Cuisine
Flit between rustic delights and Riviera decadence as you coast from cove to cove. In Liguria's Portovenere, linger over a lunch of farinata, the custardy chickpea pancake that's a street-food staple. Splash out in Porto Cervo's starry eateries, where Sardinia's own bottarga and pane carasau take center stage. In Saint-Tropez, rise late for a bistro brunch of buttery croissants and coffee before idling between champagne bars and art galleries. For a toes-in-the-sand treat, tuck into salty panisse fries on Pampelonne beach, beloved by Bardot and the '60s jet set.
Historical References
Stroll Portovenere's castello, where crumbling churches whisper of medieval monks and maritime marauders. Porto Cervo's yacht-stippled marinas may steal the limelight, but the hinterland conceals nuraghi, Bronze Age towers built by Sardinia's mysterious ancient inhabitants. In Saint-Tropez, stumble stone-drunk through time: the pastel townhouses once sheltered 18th-century fishermen, while the gendarmes' uniforms recall an age when the future resort was but a sleepy army outpost. From Palma's Gothic cathedral to Fréjus' Roman amphitheatre, these bygone glories still peek through the glamour of the present.
Things to Do
Beyond Monte Carlo's casino glitz, the Riviera slow-life beckons. Sprawl on a plage in Baie des Lecques, nursing an ice-cream headache between lazy dips. Pedal in Port-Vendres' gently rolling hills, pausing at country wineries to trade saddle soreness for free-flowing Banyuls vintages. In Palma, embrace the Spanish ritual of paseo in the waterfront Parc de la Mar before nabbing tickets to the ballet at Teatre Principal. Wind down with a midnight dip off your yacht, the salt-kissed night breeze carrying music and laughter from the shoreside soirées.
Packing Guide
Embrace Italian Riviera chic in a skirt and top set by Emporio Sirenuse, the line created by the famed hotel for languid days on the beaches of Sardinia that call for something a bit more elevated than a simple sarong. But also do pack a sarong from that other Italian resort brand Missoni for days on the beach in Portovenere in Cinque Terre. Be sure to bring along short sleeve Loewe button-downs for him and shirt dresses for her, for a day of shopping small boutiques and stopping in ancient cathedrals in the historic town Palma de Mallorca Spain—Loewe is originally a Spanish label after all.
