Cuisine

Savor the catch of the day and the fruits of the vine as you meander along these legend-steeped shores. On Ponza, a yachters' hideaway par excellence, devour linguine con aragosta, tossed with spiny local lobsters and glugs of grassy olive oil. Amalfi's cliffside lemon groves yield sfusato amalfitano, fist-sized citrus that crown everything from aperol spritzes to delizia al limone, a cream-drenched sponge cake. In Bonifacio, sample figatellu, a smoky wild-boar sausage, with earthy Corsican reds at a neighborhood cave. And what trip to Gozo would be complete without ftira, a chewy sourdough pizza mounded with capers, olives and sun-dried tomatoes?

Historical References

Sail into the pages of a living history book, where Roman emperors rubbed shoulders with medieval Hospitallers. Valletta's auberges, once the lodgings of ascetic crusader-monks, now house Baroque art treasures. Windswept Bonifacio, Corsica's southernmost town, perches on an impregnable bluff said to have repelled Phoenicians, Byzantines and Genoese alike. Amalfi's Moorish-influenced cathedral attests to centuries of trade with the Levant, while Positano's Byzantine icon, the Madonna Nera, recalls a distant age of religious fervor. From Ponza's eerie grottoes, believed to be the lair of Homer's sorceress Circe, to Gozo's Ġgantija temples, older than the pyramids, this route is a roll-call of Mediterranean civilization.

Things to Do

Play castaway for a day on Ponza's Chiaia di Luna beach, a perfect crescent of pale sand sheltered by towering tufa cliffs. Bargain for baroque baubles and majolica ceramics in the artisan workshops of Amalfi and Positano before an afternoon sprint up the 1,800 steps to Nocelle, a time-warp village with pulse-quickening views. In Corsica, join the sentier des douaniers, a cliff-hanging coastal path once patrolled by Genoese customs agents on the lookout for smugglers. End the day with a toes-in-the-sand seafood feast on Xlendi Bay, a ravishing inlet on Gozo's southern coast, washed down with chilled Girgentina, the island's indigenous white varietal.

Packing Guide

Overlook the Gulf of Salerno on the Amalfi Coast in a dress by new label Marlies Grace, which feature delightful authentic shell details. Continue that mermaid energy in Positano with perfectly beachy looks by Cult Gaia for her and nautical Thom Browne outfits for him to enjoy world-class meals while overlooking layered terraces and whitewashed houses. They’re also ideal to wear for discovering hidden courtyards and iconic churches. Keep the beachy vibe alive in the Golfo di Castellammare in the North of Sicily in something white poplin and airy by The Row.
