Cuisine
In Syracuse's Ortigia market, vendors slice wedges of pecorino and heap caper berries onto wax paper, to be tucked into your yacht's galley for an indulgent midnight snack. On Gozo, fishermen haul in lampuki (mahi-mahi) to star in rich fish pies and delicate carpaccios in waterfront restaurants. Bite into the most famous local delicacy, pastizzi, as the warm ricotta oozes from the flaky pastry pockets.
Historical References
From the weathered Greek columns in Syracuse to the mysterious Neolithic temples of Gozo, this itinerary spans the ages. On Hvar, wander the ancient agricultural plain of Stari Grad, where the same stone walls have demarcated crops since the 4th century BC. Brindisi's Appian Way bears the footprints of conquering Roman armies and doomed prisoners, who passed through the columns marking the end of the road. In Parga, clamber up to the ruins of an Ottoman castle, its tumbled stones once mortared with the blood and sweat of subjugated Greeks who never stopped fighting for liberty.
Things To Do
Launch a kayak or yacht tender to explore the grottoes that riddle Gozo's coast, where the cerulean water shimmers against the limestone. Dive the WWII wrecks and ancient amphorae off Syracusa, before an evening passeggiata through Ortigia's Jewish quarter, the air redolent with citrus and spices. Climb Parga's 410 hillside steps to sip an espresso in the shadow of the Venetian castle, or plunge into the limpid waters of Lichnos Beach, the white pebbles massaging your soles. Inhale the wild herbs perfuming Brindisi's olive groves and vineyards, imagining Odysseus and Aeneas doing the same millennia ago.
Packing Guide
Bring your best outdoor sport looks by Norba for her and Lululemon for him for touring Gozo Malta, which offers unparalleled hiking—and views. But it’s not all outdoorsy, set off for a day in the small coastal town of Parga, Greece with her Cesta Collective beach bag packed with an Eres pareo and SkinCeuticals sunscreen, and a Polonio swimsuit for him. Don’t forget your Leica to get the best shots in Plato’s hometown of Syracusa.
